Colton Winterfest 10 Miler 2016 Results

Hi everyone and thank you again for running last Saturday in Colton as well your patience in our getting these results to you.

Just to recap a few highlights of the event:

·        Overall female course record was established – Shannon Desrosiers finished first woman and fourth overall in this international event in 1:07:58! This broke Shannon’s own former record of 1:08:50 from 2006 (as then Shannon Smith). Shannon, a sub 3 hour marathoner, now owns the 3 fastest times for woman on the course. Shannon is a Canadian born native (British Columbia) who attended college at St. Lawrence University and who now lives with her family just up the road from the race course. She now is one win behind local speedster Stephanie (O’Brien) Rogers in female race history for total number of wins (Shannon’s 3 to Stephanie’s 4).

·        Jon French, a Gouverneur, NY native who now resides in Syracuse, NY ran the fourth fastest time in course history. He now owns the second (58:32), fourth (59:19), and eleventh (1:02:01) fastest times in course history (including wins in 2012 and 2016) behind Joel Gordon’s course record 58:25 from 2005. It should be noted that both of Jon’s sub 1 hour times on the course (only person to do so) have come under lousy road conditions. Regardless if simply just a fast man with good genetics, or machine or just something he acquired in his childhood drinking water, he is a champion among champions and we appreciate his demonstrations of talent to our difficult race course. I can’t wait to see what he will do with a year in which there is better temps and clear roads! Jon, like our 2016 women’s champion, is a graduate of St. Lawrence University.

·        Speaking of Gouverneur drinking water; 2nd place overall this year was 2013 race winner Jacob Erdman of Gouverneur. Even curious yet; event records shows former 3 time winner Ralph Trumble from Gouverneur as well! Coincidence?!

·        11 age group top ten records were recorded as follows (race inception was 2002). We note - two of the participants below are from Gouverneur AND drink that water:

o   Jacob Erdman 3rd fastest in M19& under (1:03:59

o   Victoria Lederer 3rd fastest in F20-29 (1:11:02

o   Shannon Desnosiers overall fastest in F30-39 (1:07:58) – Shannon now owns the fastest age records for both F20-29 and F30-39.

o   Jon French 2nd fastest in M30-39 (59:19) – Jon now owns top ten age records in the M19 & under (fastest), M20-29 (fastest) and M30-39 (2nd fastest).

o   Shondel Boyden 3rd fastest in F40-49 (1:15:20). Shondel owns multiple top ten age records in the F30-39 and F40-49.

o   Christian Belair 5th fastest in M40-49 (1:05:14

o   Julie Rapczynski 9th fastest in F50-59 (1:29:38

o   Lyn Short 4th fastest in F60-69 (1:31:04) – Lyn now owns the four fastest times in that age group along with the three fastest in F50-59 (where she holds 6 out of the 10 tracked).

o   Richard Borsos 6th fastest in M60-69 (1:15:42

o   Chris Jermyn 3rd fastest in M70-79 (1:30:52) – Chris owns the fastest time in this M70-79 age group as well the fastest in M60-69.

o   Jean Bernaquez 2nd fastest in M80 & over (2:00:43) – Jean owns the 3 fastest times in this age group and a whole bunch in M70-79. At 83 years of age (our oldest contestant), there seems no stopping this man!

·        Race weather / conditions – 17 degrees, heavy overcast and snow covered roads (all ten stinking miles!) Local weather /conditions the day after the event – 50 degrees Fahrenheit, no wind, mostly cloudy skies, and bare paved roads…. *&$#&@!

·        Awards announcements found 4 errors after the fact. I apologize to the following athletes for my blunders.

o   Women’s race winner Shannon Desrosiers was not recognized as the fastest Colton local racer. She should have been. As matter of fact, her time now places her as THE fastest local race time ever (1:07:58), man or woman. Great job Shannon and sorry I missed your address in my review of local contestants!

o   Bill Amberman of Norfolk was completely forgot in announcement for the M60-69 age group. Worst yet was fact he seemingly was only a few yards away from me during awards and I still missed him. He finished fourth in the age group. Bill is an animal as a runner and faithfully long standing supporter of our event. Besides laughing at my poor attempts at humor, he brings class and good competition every year he runs. Thanks Bill! Sir Bill owns multiple top ten age group records in M50-59 and M60-69. I’m sure he would own more in his career at Colton but rumor is he was born at 52 years of age and had no youth. I am unable to verify that tale in truth.

o   Martin Callan, our neighbor North and across the river (St. Lawrence) in Cornwall was left off the awards podium by a typo to the on the street results sheets. An on-the-scene equipment glitch caused me to lose my ability to cross reference names, ages, and awards at the finish line this year like in previous years. Martin was the sole causality to that process. Sorry Martin, not intentional. Martin finished fourth in the M50-59 age group.

o   Because of the above typo, Chris Preston moves up to 5th place in the M30-39 (trophy forthcoming Chris and sorry for the error).

·        Anyone included here waiting on a trophy or sweatshirt, hang with Renee and I and we will have those to you ASAP (pending our on-going divorce talks).

·        I publicly apologize also for the described tasteless slowest finisher award (besides the tasteful maple syrup prize also awarded). It did not set well with some folks to which I completely understand and apologize. Fun is the sole intention to my sometimes classless sideshow humor but this one seemingly went a little too far. Not my intent to which I again apologize to anyone offended. I promise to make up for it next year to my own insensitive expense.

·        No more late starts please! Sorry about that again everyone.

Speaking of next year; I’m thinking more a sideshow during the wait for the awards ceremony. A little snack food, some entertainment in music and comic relief and maybe a massage table thrown in (massage therapist optional), sounds like a party to me! If talented and interested in being part of the show, let me know. Also, next year is 15 years for the race. I’d like to recognize anyone that has run all 15 races so let me know if you have (or will) beforehand if able. I will also be selling on race day (besides consuming myself), Gouverneur drinking water for those interested.
